SALIBA IMPRESSES ON ARSENAL DEBUT

Frenchman William Saliba made his competitive debut for Arsenal during this season’s Premier League opener with fellow London team Crystal Palace and he was the best player of the pitch. The centre back was the best player on the pitch.

Arsenal signed Saliba three years ago from French side Saint Etienne and he was loaned back to the club for one more season. The central defender also played for French teams OGC Nice and Marseille as an Arsenal loanee before he returned to North London this summer. Saliba has been a regular in the Arsenal starting XI since his return from a loan spell at Marseille.

He featured as a starter in pre-season games against Everton, Chelsea and Sevilla before retaining the status for the Premier League opener against Palace.

Saliba, 21, showed why he’s widely regarded as one of the best defenders on the world football stage during the Palace game as he was named the best player. He was presented with the man-of-the-match award after an impressive performance on what was his competitive debut for Arsenal. The French international helped the Gunners keep a clean sheet during the game which ended in a 2-0 victory for his team.

Arsenal were the better team in the first half of their game with Palace and they had a Gabriel Martinelli header to show for it. The Brazil international had earlier squandered a very good to score the first goal of the game in the third minute before he converted his second chance of the game on 20 minutes off a corner kick. Hosts Palace proved to be more difficult for Arsenal in the second halfand they didn’t seal their win until the final ten minutes when Englishman Marc Guehi put through his own net. The goal clinched a well deserved victory for the Gunners.
